New report: Climate policy in the Central Asian countries

Oslo, 04.01.2022

In cooperation with Cicero, Vista Analyse has prepared the report "Climate policy in the Central Asian countries" for the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Central Asia includes the countries of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

We describe current climate polices and historical and current climate gas emissions in all five countries.

The countries in the region, apart from Turkmenistan, have drawn up concrete climate plans recorded for COP26. Climate policy in these countries is closely linked to energy policy and the use of coal and petroleum. Technology development and modernization of energy markets have the potential to significantly lower emissions of greenhouse gases. Hydroelectric power plays a significant role in parts of the region. Sustainable management of water resources is important for adaptation to a warmer climate and to ensure long-term sustainability for rivers, lakes, and agricultural land in the countries. In a part of the world where climate change will be felt most strongly, increasing robustness for more extreme weather is important.
