Information about the project “Structural Racism in Bergen”	 	
 
Vista Analysis	 and KIFO	 (Institute	 For	 Church, Religion and Worldview Research)	 are	 conducting	 a 	
survey	 on	 structural	 racism	 on	 behalf	 of Bergen	 Municipality	. The	 survey is	 commissioned	 by	 the	 City	 	
Council`s	 Department for	 Culture	, Diversity	 and	 Gender	 Equality	 in Bergen.	 	
 
We	 hope 	that	 the	 study	 will	 provide	 a knowledge	 status	 about	 the	 situation	 for	 people	 with	 a minority	 	
background	, and it	 consists	 of: 	
 
• A	 knowledge	 status	 about	 research	 on	 the	 topic	 	
• A	 qualitative	 study	 of selected	 topics	 and	 groups	. 	
• A	 quantitative	 study	 of experiences	 with	 racism	 and	 discrimination	 in minority	 communities	 in 	
Bergen.	 	
 
The	 study	 is an	 opportunity	 to gain	 more	 knowledge	 about	 whether	 there	 are	 attitudes	 and	 structures	 	
in our	 society	 that	 discriminate	 against	 citizens	 who	 have a different	 background	 than	 the	 majority	. The 	
target	 group	 is people	 who	 live in Norway	 but	 who	 originate	 from	 other	 countries	, such	 as 	Asia,	 Africa	, 	
Eastern	 Europe and Latin America.	 There	 may	 be	 other	 people	 who	 have	 experienced	 various	 forms	 of 	
discrimination	 and	 racism	, but	 such	 a delimitation	 makes	 this	 study	 more	 feasible	. 	
 
We	 have	 chosen	 to ask	 members	 from	 organizations	 that	 receive	 grants	 from Bergen	 Municipality	 (City 	
Council Department for	 Culture	, Diversity	 and	 Gender	 Equality	), in	 addition	 we	 have	 contacted	 member	 	
organizations	 in the	 Bergen Immigrant Council and a	 number	 of organizations	 and	 congregati	ons	 in 	
different religions.	 	
 
The	 aim	 of the	 study	 is to	 come	 up	 with	 proposals	 for	 operationalisations	 of structural	 racism	 in the	 	
Norwegian	 context	, and	 what	 this	 means	 for Bergen	 today	.
